Ateş Dikeni / Firethorn

Moda'daki park ve bahçeler "Ateş Dikeni" (Pyracantha) adlı çalılarla donatıldığından bu yana serçeler bayram ediyor olmalılar. Gülgiller familyasına ait bu bitkinin kırmızı renkli tatlı meyveleri onlar için enfes bir besin kaynağı oluşturuyor.

Sparrows must be very happy ever since parks and gardens of Moda have been ornamented with shrubs known as Firethorn (Pyracantha). Sweet red fruits of this plant from the Rosaceae (rose family) is a delicious source of nutrition for them.

Canon Powershot SX40 HS

Yeni makinem Canon Powershot SX40 HS ile çektiğimbir fotoğraf. Kuş fotoğrafları çekmek için DSLR makine ve 150-500 mm lenstenoluşan ağır ekipmanımı taşımak istemediğim durumlarda artık bu küçük kompaktmakinem ile çekim yapacağım. SX40 HS ultra-zoom özelliğine sahip; 35 x optikzoom’u ve ayrıca optik zoom yetersiz kaldığı takdirde kullanılabilecek x1.5x vex2.0 oranında dijital tele-konvertörü var. Makinenin tek kusuru algılayıcısınınçok küçük olması (1/2.3) fakat Canon’un Digic 5 işlemcisi ve HS sistemisayesinde internette yayınlamak için güzel fotoğraflar elde edilebiliyor. Bu postbiraz Canon’un reklâmı oldu, ama ne yapayım, SX40 HS beklemediğim ölçüde iyiperformans gösteren bir makine çıktı ve ben de bu sevincimi sizle paylaşmakistedim :)

Not: Yukarıdaki fotoğraf SX 40 HS’in Auto veya Pmodunda makinenin kendi ayarları ile değil, Manuel modda kendi belirlediğim ISO,enstantene, diyafram değerleri ile çekilmiştir. Post-processing olarak sadece çokhafif Level-Curves ayarı yapılmış, Sharpness (keskinlik) veya Noise Reduction (kumlanmayı giderme) işlemleri uygulanmamıştır. Çekim 35x optik zoom + x2.0dijital tele-konvertör uygulanarak elde gerçekleştirilmiştir.

A photo that I took with my new camera, CanonPowershot SX40 HS. From now on, I will use this little compact camera for birdphotography when I do not want to carry my heavy DSLR and 150-500 mm lens.Canon Powershot SX40 HS is a 35x ultra zoom compact camera and has also adigital tele-convertor of x1.5 and x2.0. It has a very small sensor (1/2.3) but,thanks to Canon’s new Digic 5 image processor and HS system, it is possible tomake nice photos to be published on the web. This post has been anadvertisement of Canon but SX40 HS has a very good performance beyond myexpectations and I just wanted to share my joy with you :)

P.S. I took the photo hereabovenot in Auto or P mode but in Manual mode with my own ISO, shutter speed,aperture settings. In post-processing I slightly made a Level-Curves adjustmentbut did not increase Sharpness or did not reduce Noise. The focal length of this handheld shot is 35x optic zoom + x2.0 digital tele-convertor.

Kara Boyunlu Batağan (Black-necked Grebe)

Dün akşam köpeklerim Alex ve Lily ile sahilde yürüyüş yaparken, Moda Deniz Klübü ile Moda İskelesi arasında kalan bölgede, uzaktan bakıldığında ördeği andıran bir kuşun tek başına yüzdüğünü gördüm. İskeleye yaklaştığında başındaki altın rengi tüyleri fark ettim ve Moda’da yaşadığı söylenen fakat bugüne dek hiç rastlayamadığım Bahri (Podiceps cristatus) olduğunu sandım. Zavallı köpeklerimi çekiştire çekiştire aceleyle eve döndüm, fotoğraf makinemi kaptım ve tekrar Moda İskelesi’ne giderek yeni keşfimi sevinçle fotoğrafladım. Daha sonra, kimlik doğrulaması için Türkiye’nin Anonim Kuşları veritabanına girdim, ve hayretle, Bahri (Podiceps cristatus) zannettiğim bu kuşun akraba bir tür sayılabilecek Kara Boyunlu Batağan (Podiceps nigricollis) olduğunu öğrendim. Batağangiller (Podicipedidae) ailesi, üyeleri dünyanın dört bir yanına dağılmış bulunan, su kıyısında yaşayıp balıkla beslenen, mükemmel yüzme ve dalma yeteneğine sahip bir grup. Kara Boyunlu Batağan (Podiceps nigricollis) kış mevsiminde siyah ve mat beyaz renkli iken, üreme döneminde altın sarısına dönüşen ve yelpaze şekli alan kulak tüyleri ile tanınıyor; parlak kırmızı gözleri ise yaz-kış en dikkat çeken fiziksel özelliği.

Yesterday, during my evening walk on the seashore with my dogs Alex and Lily, I noticed a bird looking like a duck and swimming alone in the area between the Moda Sea Club and the Moda Pier. When it came closer to the pier, I saw the golden feathers on its head and thought it would be a Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus). I returned home in a hurry, grabbed my camera and went back to the pier to photograph my new discovery. Later on, I examined Turkey’s Anonymous Birds database and learned that this bird I thought to be a Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) was in fact a Black-necked Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis). The Grebe family (Podicipedidae) is a group of water birds widely distributed around the world. They feed on fish and are excellent swimmers and divers. The Black-necked Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) having black and white feathers in winter is distinguished with its fan-shaped golden ear feathers during the breeding season; its bright red eyes are its most striking physical feature all year long.

Kara Kızılkuyruk (Black Redstart)

3 Mart Perşembe sabahı Moda Deniz Klübü otoparkının üzerindeki yamaçta daha önce hiç görmemiş olduğum yukarıdaki ufaklık ile karşılaştım. Seri çekimde makinalı tüfek gibi ses çıkaran Canon Eos 7D ile 36 kare fotoğrafını çektiğim halde uçup gitmedi fakat sadece üzerine tünediği beton sütundan bir ağacın dalına geçiş yaparak “sürekli profilden alma, yoksa beni tanıyamayacaksın, biraz da kuyruğumu çek” dercesine bana arkasını dönüp turuncu renkli kuyruğunu gösterdi :) İyi ki de öyle yapmış, çünkü elimdeki bu fotoğraflara rağmen kimliğini teşhis etmekte biraz zorlandım. Fakat sonuçta Türkiye’nin Anonim Kuşları (TRAKUŞ) ve The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) sitelerindeki bilgiler ve resimler sayesinde yeni keşfimin bir Kara Kızılkuyruk (Phoenicurus ochruros) olduğunu anladım. İsminde “kara” (siyah) renge atıf yapılmasının nedeni erkeğinin başı, boynu ve göğsünün koyu gri-siyah tonlarda olması. RSPB sitesindeki erkek ve dişi Kara Kızılkuyruk illüstrasyonlarına bakılırsa, yukarıda gördüğünüz ufaklık güzel ve zarif bir hanımefendi olsa gerek.

On March 3 Thursday morning, on the hillside above the Moda Sea Club car park, I met with this beauty I had never seen before. Although I shot 36 frames with my Canon Eos 7D which sounds like machine-gun burst in serial mode, it didn’t fly away but only changed its position by jumping from the cement column onto the branch of a tree, turned its back and showed me its orange coloured tail as if it was saying “don’t take my pictures only in profile, you won’t be able to identify me, see also my tail” :) I should thank for this help because despite the photos I had difficulty to identify this bird. But after having visited the websites of the Turkey’s Anonymous Birds (TRAKUS) and The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) I understood that my new discovery was a Black Redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros). It’s called “black” because the head, neck and chest of the male have dark grey-black tones. According to the male and female Black Redstart illustrations on the RSPB website, the little one you see hereabove should be a beautiful and elegant lady.

Ekin Kargası (Rook)

Moda’dan Kadıköy’e uzanan ağaçlar ve çimenlerle kaplı sahil yolunda İSKİ arıtma tesisi civarında Leş Kargası (Corvus Cornix) ve Küçük Karga (Corvus Monedula) sürüleri arasında az sayıda Ekin Kargası (Corvus Frugilegus) da yaşamakta. İri vücudu, simsiyah tüyleri, kalın ve güçlü gagası, soğuk ve sert bakışları ile ürkütücü bir görünüme sahip olsa da Ekin Kargası aslında ağırbaşlı ve çekingen bir kuş; en azından benim gözlemlediklerim böyle. “Yemek, yemek!” diye sahilde gezen insanların peşinde uçuşan ve bırakılan mamaları sokak kedileri ve köpeklerinden önce kapmak için yarışan Leş Kargası’ndan farklı olarak, Ekin Kargası ağaçların yüksek dallarına tüneyerek olan biteni uzaktan seyreden bir “ağır abi”.

The green area around ISKI water treatment plant located on the Moda-Kadiköy coast path shelters a few Rooks (Corvus Frugilegus) besides large numbers of Hooded (Corvus Cornix) and Little (Corvus Monedula) Crows. Despite it has a scary image with its big body, jet black hair, thick and strong beak, cold and severe looks, the Rook or at least the ones I observed are demure and even timid birds. Unlike the Hooded Crows flying over people’s heads and racing with street cats and dogs for food, the Rook is a “big brother” who prefers to sit on the highest branches of the trees and to watch from distance and in a dignified manner what happens.

Kızılgerdan (European Robin)

2010 yılının bu son yazısında sizlere Moda Burnu’nda rastlayacağınız en tatlı kuş olan Kızılgerdan’ı (Erithacus Rubecula) tanıtmak istiyorum. Ormanlarda, bahçelerde, ağaçlık alanlarda yaşayan ötücü bir kuş olan Kızılgerdan ülkemizde daha çok Karadeniz ve Marmara bölgelerinde gözlemlenen, Ege ve Akdeniz bölgelerinde ise ancak kış aylarında karşılaşılan bir türdür. Moda’da deniz klübünün otoparkının üzerindeki bodur ağaçlarla kaplı yamaçta ilk kez geçtiğimiz Mart ayında gördüğüm Kızılgerdan ile ikinci karşılaşmam Kasım ayında oldu ve yukarıdaki fotoğrafı da aynı yerde iki gün önce çektim. Ortalama boyu 12 ilâ 14 cm. arasında değişen Kızılgerdan’ın erkeği ile dişisi arasında görünüm farkı yoktur ve her ikisi de ötücüdür. İnsanlar ile ilişki bakımından Kızılgerdan, Büyükbaştankara ile aynı tavrı sergiler ve insanlara yaklaşmamayı tercih eder. Moda’da pencere kenarlarına bırakılan ekmek kırıntıları ve yemlerin başlıca müşterisi, açık pencere bulduğunda evin içine girmekten de çekinmeyen Serçe’dir. Buna karşılık, ne Kızılgerdan ne Büyükbaştankara hiçbir zaman evlere yaklaşmazlar, pencerenizin kenarına veya balkonunuza tünemezler, ağaçların sık dalları arasında kendi dünyalarında gözlerden uzak bir yaşam sürerler.

In this last article of 2010 I would like to introduce you the sweetest bird in Moda, the European Robin (Erithacus Rubecula). Living in forests, gardens and wooded areas, the European Robin is a small member of the passerine birds family. In Turkey, it may be observed in the Black Sea and Marmara regions, if you live on the Aegean or Mediterranean coast you have chances to see it only in winter. I saw the European Robin in Moda for the first time this year in March, our second encounter was in November and I took the photo hereabove two days ago. The average size of the European Robin is 12-14 cm., there is no difference in appearance between males and females and both are passerine. As to their relationship with humans, they exhibit the same attitude with the Great Tits and prefer to keep their distance from us. Unlike the Sparrows who do not hesitate to come and eat the bread crumbs left on the window edges or balconies and who even dare to enter into the houses when the windows are open, the European Robins and the Great Tits never approach to humans and continue their life in their own world among the branches of the trees.

Bay Gilbert ve kargaları / Mr. Gilbert and his crows

Moda sakinlerinden 70 yaşında bir hayvansever olan Bay Gilbert her sabah köpekleri Tara ve Cora ile sahil yolunda yürüyüşe çıkar ve ceplerine doldurduğu mamalar ile sokak hayvanlarını besler. Sokak hayvanları deyince aklınıza kediler, köpekler geliyor değil mi? Peki ya kargalar? Moda’daki diğer kuşlardan farklı olarak kargalar tıpkı kedi ve köpekler gibi insanlarla iletişim halindedirler, kimin kim olduğu bilirler, hayvanseverleri özellikle tanırlar ve aç oldukları zaman gelip ciddi ciddi sizden yemek isterler. İşte bu nedenle, Bay Gilbert sabah yürüyüşüne çıktığında kargalar bayram eder ve heyecanla gaklayarak onun peşisıra uçmaya başlarlar. Tabii Bay Gilbert de onları hiçbir zaman hayalkırıklığına uğratmaz ve evinde onlar için özel olarak ufak ufak dilimlediği sosisleri bir bir kasketinin üzerine yerleştirir. Sonra ne mi olur? Mr. Gilbert, a 70-year-old animal lover resident of Moda, walks each morning on the coastal path with his dogs Tara and Cora and feeds street animals. When I say street animals you think of cats and dogs, don’t you? But how about crows? Unlike other birds in Moda, crows are in permanent communication with humans just like cats and dogs, they know who is who, they especiallly recognize animal lovers and when they are hungry they come and seriously ask food from you. Therefore, when Mr. Gilbert goes out for his morning walk, crows start to caw with happiness, fly over his head and follow him. Of course Mr. Gilbert never disappoints them, prepares small pieces of sausage especially for them and he puts these sausages one by one on his cap while walking. Curious about what happens then? Well, just watch :)

Sığırcıklar geldi, kış geldi / Starlings have come, winter as well

3 Aralık Cuma günü İstanbul’da termometre 25 dereceyi gösteriyor, insanlar sonbahar kıyafetlerini üzerlerinden atmış, sanki yaz mevsimindeymiş gibi t-shirt’lerle dolaşıyorlardı. Televizyonlar hava durumu bültenlerinde Avrupa’daki soğuk dalgasının haftasonundan itibaren İstanbul’u da etkisi altına alacağını duyuruyorlardı, fakat hava o kadar sıcaktı ki insanın inanası gelmiyordu. Aynı gün şehrin semalarında beliren kalabalık sığırcık sürüleri de bizlerin gözlerini açmamıştı.

4 Aralık Cumartesi akşamı İstanbul kuzeybatıdan esen soğuk bir rüzgâr olan karayelin etkisi altına girdi ve 5 Aralık Pazar yani bugün hava sıcaklığı 10 derece birden düştü. Pencereden dışarı baktığımda gördüğüm manzara yağmur ve rüzgâra aldırmaksızın evimin önündeki kestane ağaçlarının dallarına tünemiş keyif çatan sığırcıklardı.

Kış mevsimi ile sığırcıklar arasındaki bağlantıyı ancak bu kuşlar hakkında bilgi edinmek için kitaplarıma göz attığımda kurabildim. Son üç gün içinde yaşadıklarımızla doğrulanan bilimsel verilere göre, Türkiye’de karasal iklimin egemen bulunduğu Anadolu’da yaz-kış yaşayan yerleşik bir tür olan sığırcık Akdeniz ikliminin etkisi altındaki İstanbul ile Ege ve Akdeniz kıyı şeridine sadece kış mevsiminde uğruyor.

Şimdi merak ediyorum, acaba gelecek yıl da sığırcıkların gelişi ile hava sıcaklığındaki düşüş tam olarak aynı günlere mi rastlayacak?

Friday, December 3rd, was a warm summer day in Istanbul. The temperature was 25°C, people were wearing t-shirts instead of autumn clothing. The weather forecast had announced that Istanbul would fall in the weekend under the influence of the cold snap coming from Europe, but it was hard to believe it seeing the nice weather outside. The flocks of starlings which appeared the same day on the city’s skies did not open our eyes either.

On Saturday, December 4th, the “Black Wind” carrying cold air from northwest started to blow in Istanbul and today, December 5th, the temperature fell more than 10 degrees. When I looked out of the window, I saw starlings perched on the branches of the chestnut tree, enjoying their day without complaining the rain and the wind.

I made the connection between winter and starlings when I opened my books. According to the scientific data which have been confirmed with what we have lived during the last three days, starlings are supposed to be resident birds of Anatolia and live all year long in regions where reigns the terrestrial climate, but, as they do not like the Mediterranean climate, they visit Istanbul as well as the Aegean and the Mediterranean coasts only in winter.

Now I wonder whether the arrival of starlings and the fall of the temperature will encounter exactly the same days also next year.

İspinoz (Chaffinch)

İtiraf ediyorum: Yaz aylarında tembellik yapıp kuş gözlemini boşverdim. Ancak, dün itibariyle yeniden gözleme başladım ve ilk sürpriz sabah köpeklerimle yürüyüş yaparken karşıma çıktı. İstanbul'da yaşayanlar Moda’da Koço restorandan Yoğurtçu Parkı’na kadar uzanan yeşil alanı bilirler. İşte orada, sokak köpekleri için yapılan barınağın arkasındaki ağaçlık yamaçta çok sayıda ispinoza rastladım. Ben bu kuşları uzaktan hep serçe diye algılıyordum; dün de öyle zannettim fakat aniden bir tanesinin kuyruğundaki sarı-beyaz renkler dikkatimi çekti ve yeni bir tür keşfettiğimi anladım. İspinoz birçoğunuz için son derece sıradan bir tür olabilir ama benim gibi amatör bir kuş gözlemcisi için bu da büyük bir keşif işte! :)

I admit it: I was a lazy birder during summer. However, as of yesterday I started bird watching again and the first suprise came along during my morning walk with my dogs. Those who live in Istanbul know the green area lying between Koço Restaurant and Yoğurçu Park in Moda. There, on the wooded hillside behind the shelter for stray dogs, I noticed a large number of chaffinches. I had always perceived these birds from distance as house sparrows, I had the same perception also yesterday, but suddenly I noticed the yellow-white colours on their queues and I understood that I discovered a new species. Many of you may consider chaffinch as an ordinary species but, for an amateur bird watcher like me, this is a great discovery! :)

Rusya'dan Merhaba! / Hello from Russia!

Geçtiğimiz Cumartesi sabahı Türk Hava Yolları'nın İstanbul-Moskova uçağına bindim ve bir haftalığına çok merak ettiğim bir ülke olan Rusya'yı ziyarete geldim. Saraylar, kiliseler ve müzeler arasında kültür ve sanat ağırlıklı olarak devam eden gezim sırasında kuş gözlemini de ihmal etmedim. Gerek Moskova gerek Saint-Petersburg'da İstanbul'da olduğu gibi serçeler, kargalar ve güvercinler ağırlıkta. Fakat Moskova'da İstanbul'dan farklı olarak sadece gri-yeşil renkli adi güvercinler değil beyaz güvercinler de göze çarpıyor. İstanbul'da beyaz güvercin genellikle kafes kuşudur, doğal ortamda zor rastlanır; Moskova'da ise her yerde uçuşuyorlar. Moskova Nehri kıyısında fotoğrafladığım bu güzellikleri sizlere sunarken hepinize iyi bir haftasonu diliyorum.

Last Saturday early in the morning I took the Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Moscow and I came to visit for one week Russia which was a country I was very curious about. Although this is mainly a culture and art tour and I spend my time mostly in palaces, churches and museums I do not forget birdwatching. Just like in Istanbul, I have observed lots of house sparrows, crows and pigeons also in Moscow and in Saint-Petersburg. However, unlike Istanbul, Moscow houses not only grey-green coloured common pigeons but white pigeons as well. In Istanbul white pigeons are generally caged and hard to find free in nature; in Moscow you can see them fly everywhere. So here I offer you the beauties I photographed over the Moscow River and I wish you all a very nice weekend.

Su üzerinde yürüyüş / Walking on water

Bir Karabaş Martı'nın (Larus ridibindus) su üzerinde yürüme macerası. Nisan ayında Kadıköy İskelesi'nden çektiğim bir fotoğraf. Dikkat ederseniz, bu genç Karabaş Martı o tarihlerde yaz tüyüne geçmiş ve siyah renkli başlığı oluşmaya başlamış.

Ak Karınlı Ebabil (Alpine Swift)

Son bir haftadır Moda'da özellikle akşamları grup halinde tiz çığlıklar atarak hızla uçan ufak boyutlu kuşlar belirdi. Önce Ev Kırlangıcı (Delichon Urbica) olduklarını sandım, fakat apartman dairemin balkonundan çektiğim yukarıdaki fotoğrafı Türkiye'nin Anonim Kuşları topluluğunun veritabanındaki resimler ile karşılaştırdığımda Ak Karınlı Ebabil (Apus Melba) denilen türü gözlemlemiş olduğumu anladım. Ülkemizde sadece yaz aylarında görülen ve kış mevsimini Afrika'da geçiren Ak Karınlı Ebabil çok kısa bacakları olduğu için hiçbir zaman yere konamayan, ancak tırnaklarıyla yarlara ya da binaların duvarlarına tutunabilen ve genellikle gece gündüz havada kalıp uçarken uyuyan bir türmüş. Ne kadar ilginç değil mi?

Since one week, especially in the evenings, a group of small sized birds appear in the skies of Moda, flying very fast and screaming all together. I first thought they were House Martins (Delichon Urbica) but when I compared the photo hereabove that I took from the balcony of my flat with the images on the database of Turkey's Anonymous Birds society I understood that they were Alpine Swifts (Apus Melba). As a migrant species which winters in Africa, Alpine Swifts are observable in Turkey only in summer. They have very short legs which they use only for clinging to cliffs or walls and they generally fly day and night and even sleep in the air. How interesting, isn't it?

Gri Balıkçıl (Grey Heron)

Moda'dan Kadıköy'e yürüyün ve Eminönü vapuruna binin. Vapur Kadıköy İskelesi'nden ayrıldıktan sonra Haydarpaşa Mendireği boyunca ilerler. Mendireğin üzeri her zaman yüzlerce kuşla doludur ve gözlemlenebilecek türlerden biri de Gri Balıkçıl (Ardea cinerea)'dır. Yanınızda tele-objektif takılı bir fotoğraf makinesi var ise, benim iki gün önce çektiğim yukarıdaki fotoğraf gibi bir kare yakalayabilirsiniz. Gri Balıkçıl İstanbul'da yaz-kış yaşayan yerleşik bir türdür ve Haydarpaşa Mendireği'nin yanısıra Heybeliada'da gözlemlenebilir.

Walk from Moda to Kadıköy and take the ferry to Eminönü. After leaving the Kadıköy Port, the ferry sails along the Haydarpasha Breakwater. There are always hundreds of birds on the breakwater and one of the species which can be observed is the Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea). If you have a camera with a telephoto lens, you can capture a photo just like the one hereabove that I took two days ago. The Grey Heron is a resident species in Istanbul and can be observed all year long on Hardarpasha Breakwater and on Heybeliada (the Saddlebag Island) situated in the Sea of Marmara.

Kızıl Sırtlı Örümcekkuşu (Red-backed Shrike)

Geçen Pazar günü köpeklerim Alex ve Lily ile Moda'dan Kalamış'a yürürken sahil yolunda fark ettim bu güzelliği. Uzaktan önce göğsüne güneş vurmuş bir serçe sandım fakat fotoğraf makinemin tele-objektifi ile baktığımda daha önce hiç görmediğim bir tür olduğunu anladım.

I saw that beauty last Sunday, while I was walking with my dogs Alex and Lily on the coast path from Moda to Kalamış. From far I first thought it was a sparrow whose chest was shining under sunlight but when I looked with the telephoto lens of my camera I understood that it was a species I had never seen before.

Uzaktan fotoğrafını çekmeme aldırmadı, ama iki köpek ve kocaman bir objektifle kendisine doğru yürüdüğümü hissedince dikkat kesildi.

It was not disturbed about being photographed from far, but when it felt that I was approaching with two dogs and a big lens, it paid attention and kept an eye on us.

Ve bir ağacın dalları arasına sığınmayı kendisi için daha güvenli buldu.

And thought that it would be more secure to hide among the branches of a tree.

Eve döner dönmez internette bu kuş hakkında araştırma yaptım ve adının Kızıl Sırtlı Örümcekkuşu (Lanius collurio) olduğunu öğrendim. Ötücü kuşlar ailesine mensup 16-18 cm. boyundaki bu ufaklık yaz aylarını Avrupa ve Batı Asya'da kış aylarını ise Afrika'nın tropikal bölgelerinde geçiren göçmen bir tür. Çayırlık ve çalılık arazilerde yaşıyor, böcek ya da minik kurbağa ve kertenkeleleri avlayarak besleniyor. Dişisi daha kahverengi-gri tonlarda ve mat bir görünüme sahip iken, erkeği yukarıdaki fotoğraflarda gördüğünüz üzere son derece güzel ve gözalıcı bir fizik sergiliyor.

Once I got back home I did some research on the internet about this bird and learned that its name was Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio). Member of the passerine birds family, it measures 16-18 cm. long and is a migrant species that spends the summer in Europe and Western Asia but winters in tropical Africa. It generally lives in meadows and eats insects or small frogs and lizards. While the female has a dull view with brown-grey tones, the male has a very beautiful and stunning appearance as you see on the photos hereabove.

Sakarmeke (Eurasian Coot)

Bugün sizlere Moda Koyu'nda en sık gördüğümüz su kuşlarından biri olan Sakarmeke'yi (Fulica atra) tanıtmak istiyorum. Avrupa, Asya, Afrika ve Avustralya'da yaşayan bir tür olan Sakarmeke "sutavukları" ya da diğer adıyla "yelvegiller" ailesine mensuptur. Deniz kıyılarında, göllerde ve sair sulak alanlarda yaşayan bu kuşlar uçabilirler ama uçmaktan pek hazzetmezler ve zamanlarının büyük bölümünü yüzerek geçirirler. İstanbul'da yerleşik bir tür olarak tüm yıl gözlemlenebilen Sakarmeke omnivor yani gerek bitki gerek hayvan kökenli besinleri yiyebilen bir kuştur. Nesli tehlikede kuşlar grubuna girmediği ve leziz bir eti olduğu için Sakarmeke kırsal kesimlerde ne yazık ki avcıların hedefidir.

Not: Avcılıktan nefret ederim. Sırf zevk için yapılan avcılığın bir "spor dalı" ve "hobi" olarak tanıtılmasına ve meşru gösterilmesine de tamamen karşıyım.

Today I would like to introduce you the Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra) which is one of the most common water birds in Moda Bay. The Eurasian Coot lives in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, and belongs to the rail and crake bird family. Spending its life on sea coasts, lakes and other wetlands, the Eurasian Coot can fly but is generally reluctant to fly and prefers swimming. As a resident species in Istanbul, it can be observed all year long. Being an omnivore, it can eat food of vegetable or animal origin. The Eurasian Coot is not an endangered species and has a delicious meat; therefore, it is often the target of hunters in rural areas unfortunately.

Note: I hate hunting. I am completely against the hunting for pleasure and its presentation and legitimation as a "sport" and "hobby".

Karabatak (Cormorant)

Şu şehr-i İstanbul'daki en ilginç kuş hangisi diye sorsalar, yanıtım kuşkusuz Karabatak olur. Şehir merkezinde yaşayan serçeler, kargalar, martılar gibi diğer türler insanlarla içiçe ve bir şekilde iletişim halinde iken, karabataklar sürekli gözümüzün önünde fakat tamamen kendi dünyalarında hayatlarını sürdürürler. Bilinçli ve düzenli olarak her gün belirli saatlerde İstanbul Boğazı'nın kuzeyinden güneyine ve güneyinden kuzeyine bazen tek başlarına bazen ikili yada kalabalık gruplar halinde uçarlar ve bunu o kadar ciddi bir tavırla yaparlar ki onları izlediğinizde sanki çok önemli bir işe yetişiyorlar sanırsınız. Moda Koyu karabatakların şehirdeki başlıca üslerinden biridir ve kıyıdan açıkta denizin içinden sivrilen tek tük kayaların veya şamandıraların üzerinde sık sık heykel gibi dikilen karabataklar görürsünüz.

If I was asked which was the most interesting bird in Istanbul, my answer would undoubtedly be the cormorants. While the sparrows, crows, seagulls and other species living in the city center have an intimate relationship and some kind of communication with humans, the cormorants live in their own world although they are constantly before our eyes. Every day at certain hours, they consciously and regularly fly from north to south and from south to north along the Bosphorus, sometimes alone and sometimes in groups of two or more members. They do this so solemnly that when you watch them you have the feeling that they are trying to catch up with a very important job. The Moda Bay is one of the main bases of the cormorants in the city and you often see on a rock or on a buoy off shore cormorants that stand like a statue.

Avrupa Saksağanı (European Magpie)

Geçen Cumartesi köpeklerim Alex ve Lily ile Moda sahil yolunda gezinirken Saint-Joseph Lisesi’ne doğru yükselen yamaçta ağaçların arasında yukarıda gördüğünüz saksağanı fark ettim. İstanbul’un Avrupa yakasında, özellikle Büyükçekmece bölgesinde, çok sayıda saksağan görmüş olduğum halde, Moda’da daha önce bu kuşa hiç rastlamamıştım. Fotoğraf makinem her zaman olduğu gibi o sabah da yanımda bulunduğundan hemen birkaç çekim yaptım.

Last Saturday, during my morning walk on the Moda coast path with my dogs Alex and Lily, the magpie you see hereabove caught my eye among the trees on the slope rising towards Saint-Joseph High School. Although I had observed many magpies on the European side of Istanbul and particularly in Büyükçekmece district, I had never seen this bird in Moda before. I had my camera with me as usual, so I had the chance to make a couple of shots.

Kısaca saksağan deyip geçtiğimiz bu kuşun tam adı “Avrupa Saksağanı”. Kargagiller ailesine mensup olan saksağan Avrupa, Asya ve Kuzeybatı Afrika’da yaşayan yerleşik bir tür. 40-51 cm arasında değişen boyu ile kargagiller ailesinin iri üyelerinden biri. Siyah, beyaz, mavi renkli tüyleri ve uzun kuyruğu ile çok güzel ve havalı bir kuş olmasına rağmen, saksağan Avrupa ülkelerinde mutsuzluk, şanssızlık, kötü haber getirdiğine inanılan bir canlı. Parlak renkli nesneleri kapıp kaçma huyu olduğu için adı hırsıza çıkmış. Bizdeki “dam üstünde saksağan, vur beline kazmayı” sözü de pek sevecen sayılmaz. Çinliler ise tam aksini düşünüyorlar: Asya’nın diğer ucunda saksağan en değer verilen kuşlardan biri ve mutluluk, şans, güzel haber getirdiğine inanılıyor.

The full name of this bird is the “European Magpie”. It belongs to the crow family and is a resident species of Europe, Asia and Nortwest Africa. It measures 40-51 cm in length and is one of the big size members of the corvids. The magpie is a very beautiful bird with its black, white, blue coloured feathers and its long tail; however, in European countries, it is associated with unhappiness, bad luck and bad news. Since it has a tendency to steal shiny objects, it has also a bad reputation as a thief. The Turkish proverb “If you see a magpie on the roof, send it away with a mattock” is not a sign of sympathy neither. Chinese people think the exact opposite: In the Far East, the magpie is considered as one of the most precious birds and people believe that magpies bring happiness, good luck and good news.

Kırlangıçlar şimdi de Moda'da! / Swallows now in Moda!

Dün Antakya'daki kırlangıçlardan söz eden mesajımı gönderdikten sonra Moda'daki apartman dairemin balkonuna çıktım ve tam önümde gökyüzünde uçuşan kırlangıçlara bakakaldım! "Sen bizi hâlâ Antakya'da zannet, biz çoktan İstanbul'a geldik!" der gibi, Moda Deniz Klübü'nden Café Kemal'e kadar uzanan bölgede türlü türlü akrobasi hareketleri sergileyerek dönüp duruyorlardı. İçeri koşup fotoğraf makinemi kaptım ve balkondan çekime başladım. Ama kırlangıçın hızına yetişmek mümkün mü? Bir sürü denemeden sonra günün en başarılı karesi olarak ancak yukarıdaki fotoğrafı çekebildim.

Kırlangıçgiller (Hirundinidae) ailesinin en yaygın ve en iyi bilinen üyesi olan Adi Kırlangıç (Hirundo Rustica) Antarktica hariç tüm kıtalarda yaşayan göçmen bir türdür. Kış mevsimini güney yarımkürede, yaz mevsimini kuzey yarımkürede geçirir. Uzun ve ince çatal kuyruğu ile Ev Kırlangıcı ve Ebabil'den rahatça ayırt edilebilen Adi Kırlangıç havada uçan böcekleri yiyerek beslenir.

Yesterday, after I sent my post hereinbelow in which I was talking about the swallows I saw in Antioch, I stepped out on the balcony of my flat in Moda and I found myself staring at the swallows that were flying just in front of me in the sky! They were turning around with various acrobatic movements as if they were trying to tell me “You think we are still in Antioch but we have already come to Istanbul!”. I ran inside, grabbed my camera and started to take their photos from the balcony. But is it possible to catch up their speed? I made many essays and the most successful shot of the day was the one you see hereabove.

The Barn Swallow (Hirundo Rustica) is the most common and best known member of the Hirundinidae family. It lives in all continents except Antarctica and, as a migratory species, it winters in the southern hemisphere and spends the summer in the northern hemisphere. Easily distinguishable from the House Martin and the Swift with its long and thin forked tail, the Barn Swallow is an insectivorous species which is adapted to hunt flying insects.

Kırlangıçlar diyarından geldim / I came from the land of swallows

Geride bıraktığımız bir hafta boyunca Gaziantep’ten Antalya’ya Türkiye’nin Doğu Akdeniz bölgesini dolaştım. Hitit, Yunan, Roma, Ermeni, Bizans ve Osmanlı dönemlerine ait siteleri, tapınakları, kaleleri, konakları, kiliseleri, camileri hayranlıkla gezdim; müzelerde sergilenen heykel ve mozaiklerle büyülendim. Yesemek ve Karatepe’de Hititlere merhaba derken, Antakya ve Tarsus’ta Petrus ve Paulus’u tanıdım ve Hristiyanlığın doğduğu çağa geri döndüm; Uzuncaburç’taki harika Zeus tapınağında antik Yunan uygarlığını, Zeugma ve Perge’de Roma imparatorluğunun ihtişamını yaşadım. Silifke’deki Kızkalesi ile Anamur’daki Mamure Kalesi’nde Küçük Ermeni Krallığı’nı tanıdım; Anemurion’da evleri, hamamları, nekropolisiyle neredeyse bütünüyle ayakta bir Bizans şehrinin sokaklarında gezdim. Payas’ta Mimar Sinan’ın eseri olan muhteşem Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Külliyesi'ni ziyaret ederken Osmanlı mimarisinin bir kez daha zevkine vardım.

Tabii bu arada kuş gözlemini de ihmal etmedim.

Bölgede beni en çok etkileyen kuş türü Asi Nehri üzerinde uçan kırlangıçlar oldu. Nehrin sarı renkli suları üzerinde hızla bir alçalıp bir yükselerek dans eden bu küçük ve kıvrak kuşlar beni büyüledi ve Antakya aklımda “Kırlangıçlar Diyarı” olarak yer etti.

During the past seven days I wandered in the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey from Gaziantep to Antalya. I visited with admiration the sites, temples, castles, mansions, churches and mosques from the Hittite, Greek, Roman, Armenian, Byzantine and Ottoman periods; I got fascinated with the sculptures and mosaics exhibited in the museums. At Yesemek and Karatepe I saluted the Hittites, in Antioch and Tarsus I made the knowledge of St. Peter and St. Paul and I found myself back in the age of the birth of Christianity. I lived in the antic Greek civilization while visiting the wonderful Zeus temple in Uzuncaburç and I observed the splendor of the Roman Empire at Zeugma and Perge. The Maiden Castle in Silifke and the Mamure Castle in Anamur helped me to discover the Minor Armenian Kingdom and in Anemurion I strolled in the streets of a Byzantine city still standing with its houses, baths and necropolis. Finally in Payas, I visited the marvellous Sokullu Mehmet Pasha Mosque and Complex built by Sinan and I enjoyed once again the Ottoman architecture.

Meanwhile, of course, I did not neglect birdwatching.

The birds which impressed me most in the whole region were the swallows flying over the Orontes River. These small and agile birds rapidly dancing over the yellow waters of the river fascinated me and therefore Antioch was etched in my mind as the “Land of Swallows”.

Kara Başlı Sarı Kuyruksallayan (Black-Headed Yellow Wagtail)

Yukarıdaki ufaklığı ilk gördüğümde “Ah işte bir Sarı Kuyruksallayan!” demiştim. Eve dönüp Nicholas Hammond’un “How to Identify Birds” adlı kitabı ile Türkiye’nin Anonim Kuşları ve Oiseaux sitelerinde yaptığım araştırmada haksız olmadığımı fakat Kuyruksallayanlar (Motacillidae) ailesinde Sarı Kuyruksallayan (Motacilla flava), Gri Kuyruksallayan (Motacilla cinerea) ve Sarı Başlı Kuyruksallayan (Motacilla citreola) olmak üzere göğsü sarı renkli üç farklı tür bulunduğunu öğrendim. Sarı Kuyruksallayan’ın ise 17 adet alt türü varmış! Moda sahilinde fotoğrafladığım yukarıdaki ufaklık, Fransızların “Bergeronnette des Balkans” (Balkan Kuyruksallayanı) diye adlandırdıkları ve bilimsel ismi Motacilla flava feldegg olan Kara Başlı Sarı Kuyruksallayan’mış. Kış aylarını Afrika’da geçiren bu tür yılın geri kalan zamanında Balkanlar’dan Hazar Denizi’ne kadar olan bölgede suya yakın açık arazilerde yaşarmış.

When I first saw that little one hereabove I said “Oh! Here’s a Yellow Wagtail!”. Back home I made a research in Nicholas Hammond’s “How to Identify Birds” as well as in Turkey’s Anonymous Birds and Oiseaux websites and I learned that the Wagtail family (Motacillidae) included three different species all having a yellow breast; Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava), Grey Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea) and Citrine Wagtail (Motacilla citreola). Moreover, the Yellow Wagtail had 17 different sub-species! The one hereabove that I photographed in Moda is the Black Headed Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava feldegg). French people call it “Bergeronnette des Balkans” (Balkanic Wagtail). This species winters in Africa and spends the rest of the year in near water open lands from the Balkans to the Caspian Sea.

Kuyrukkakan (Northern Wheatear)

Köpeklerim Alex ve Lily ile Pazar sabahı sahildeki kayalıklardaki gezimiz sırasında yaptığım bir çekim. Deniz kıyısındaki büyük küçük tüm kuşlar köpeklerin varlığını hisseder hissetmez havalandıkları için, Kuyrukkakan (Oenanthe oenanthe) adını taşıyan bu minik güzelliği ancak uzaktan fotoğraflayabildim. Kuzey yarımkürede yaşam alanı Kanada’dan Asya’ya kadar uzanan Kuyrukkakan göçmen bir kuş olup kış aylarını Afrika’da geçirir. Ortalama 14-16 cm boyunda olan ve böcek yiyerek beslenen bu kuş kaya çatlaklarına yuva yapar.

A snapshot I took during my Sunday morning walk on the rocky seashore with my dogs Alex and Lily. Since all the birds on the beach, whether they are large or small, were taking off once they felt the presence of the dogs, I photographed this tiny beauty called the Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) from distance. Its living space in the northern hemisphere extending from Canada to Asia, the Wheatear is a migrant bird and winters in Africa. It measures about 14-16 cm in length, feeds on insects and nests in rock crevices.

Kuşlar için yere konmak havalanmaktan daha güç bir eylemdir. Hedeflediği noktaya konabilmek ve bu işi yumuşak bir biçimde başarabilmek için kuş öncelikle kanat çırpışlarını yavaşlatır ve yerçekiminin onu aşağıya çekmesine izin verir. Ardından, kanatlarını omuz seviyesine yükseltir ve bükerek alanını genişletir. Bu hareket bir yandan kuşu daha da yavaşlatır diğer yandan onu yere çakılmaktan alıkoyar. İniş noktasına yaklaşırken kuş kuyruğunu indirir ve olabildiğince açar, bu hareket fren işlevi görür ve kuşun hedeflediği noktaya konmasını sağlar.

Landing is harder than take off for birds. In order to land on the point it aims and to do it gently the bird first slows its wing beats and lets the gravity to pull it down. Then, the wings are raised at the shoulders and are twisted. This further slows the bird and prevents it from dropping. When approaching the landing point the tail is lowered and spread open, this acts as a brake and helps to put the bird on the exact landing point.

Ak Kuyruksallayan (White Wagtail)

IKEA reklâmında annesine hoşnutsuz bir edayla “Yine mi bamya?” diye soran küçük kız gibi sizin de “Yine mi Ak Kuyruksallayan?” dediğinizi duyar gibiyim. Ama ne yapayım, bu tatlı kuşlar şu günlerde her yerdeler ve müthiş poz veriyorlar. Haksız mıyım? :)

Just as the little girl in the IKEA TV commercial who asks to her mother with a frustrated expression “Gumbo again?” I hear you saying “A white wagtail again?”. But what can I do, these pretty birds are everywhere these days and have a perfect posture. Am I not right? :)

Genç bir gümüş martı / A young yellow-legged gull

Martı deyip geçmemek lazım. Sadece İstanbul’da bile gümüş martı (larus michahellis), küçük gümüş martı (larus canus), karabaş martı (larus ridibundus) gibi değişik türleri var ve bunlar erişkin yaşa gelip birbirlerinden rahatça ayırtedilebilir bir görünüm kazanıncaya kadar en azından ilk 1-2 yıl pek benzeşiyorlar. Yeni üye olduğum Türkiye’nin Anonim Kuşları adlı kuş gözlem topluluğunun internet sitesinde ve Wikipedia’da martı türleri hakkında yapılan açıklamalar ile sunulan fotoğraflara bakarak, Moda İskelesi önünde fotoğrafladığım yukarıdaki bireyin henüz erişkin yaşa gelmemiş genç bir gümüş martı olduğu sonucuna vardım. İngilizce adı "sarıbacaklı martı" olsa da, bu tür erişkinliğe ulaşıncaya kadar (ilk 4-5 yıl) pembe renkli bacaklarla arz-ı endam edermiş. Erişkin yaşa geldiğinde bacakları da gagası da gözleri de sarı renk alırmış. Ne kadar ilginç, değil mi?

Just a seagull? It's not as simple as it seems. Even only in Istanbul there are various types such as yellow-legged gull (larus michahellis), common gull (larus canus), black-headed gull (larus ridibundus) and they all have a similar appearance at least during the first 1-2 years, until they become adult and distinguishable. I examined the explanations and photos about different types of gulls in Turkey’s Anonymous Birds’ website –this is a birdwatching community I have recently joined- as well as in Wikipedia and I think the individual hereabove that I photographed in front of the Moda Pier is a young yellow-legged gull. Despite its name, the yellow-legged gull has pink coloured legs until it reaches adulthood (the first 4-5 years). When it becomes adult, not only its legs but also its beak and its eyes turn to yellow. How interesting, isn’t it?

İbibik (Hoopoe)

Bu fotoğrafı on gün önce Moda sahil yolunda –her zamanki gibi- köpeklerimi gezdirirken çektim. Evet, gözlerinize inanabilirsiniz, bu gerçekten bir İbibik! Ülkemizde “Çavuşkuşu” ve “Hüthüt” adlarıyla da bilinen İbibik Avrupa, Asya ve Afrika’da yaşayan göçmen bir tür olup sonbahar ve kış mevsimlerini Afrika’da, ilkbahar ve yaz mevsimlerini Avrupa ve Asya’da geçirir. O gün aceleyle çektiğim yukarıdaki fotoğraf turuncu-siyah renkli ibiği ile ünlü bu kuşun güzelliğini elbette ki tam olarak yansıtmıyor; fakat, kararlıyım, önümüzdeki günlerde İbibik keşfine çıkacağım ve umarım sizlerle daha başarılı İbibik fotoğrafları paylaşacağım.

I took this photo ten days ago in Moda coast path –as usual- while I was walking my dogs. Yes, you can believe your eyes, this is really a Hoopoe! Binomially named as “Upupa epops”, the Hoopoe is a migratory Afro-Eurasian species which spends the fall and winter seasons in Africa, the spring and summer seasons in Europe and Asia. The photo hereabove that I hastily took does certainly not reflect the beauty of this bird famous with its orange and black coloured crest; but I am decided, I will go for a Hoopoe expedition in the following days and I hope I will be able to share with you more successful Hoopoe photos.

Dişi Serçe (Female House Sparrow)

Erkek serçe gerdanını ve göz çevresini kaplayan siyah lekesi, kızıl-kahverengi şakakları ve ensesi ile daha çarpıcı bir görünüme sahip olsa da ben soluk renkli dişi serçeyi daha güzel ve sevimli buluyorum.

Although the Male House Sparrow has a more striking look with the black stain on its throat and around its eyes and with its reddish-brown temples and neck, I find the pale coloured Female House Sparrow more beautiful and lovely.

Büyük Baştankara (Great Tit)

Kuş gözlemine başlamadan önce o kadar kördüm ki Moda'da Deniz Klübü'nden Çay Bahçeleri'ne kadar uzanan ağaçlar üzerinde pek hoş bir sesle şakıyan bu güzel kuşu hiç görmemiştim! Kafamı kaldırıp ağaçlara bakmaya zahmet etmediğim ve biraz da aynı bölgede yaşayan yoğun serçe nüfusu çok daha az sayıda olan bu güzel kuşları perdelediği için, fotoğraf makinemin zoom objektifini ağaçların yüksek dallarına yöneltmeden önce Moda'da Büyük Baştankaraların varlığından haberim yoktu.

Avrupa, Türkiye, Kafkasya, Orta Asya ve Kuzey Afrika'da yerleşik olarak yaşayan ötücü kuşlar ailesine mensup Büyük Baştankara adının aksine boyu ancak 12-14 cm.'e erişebilen bir ufaklık. Çarpıcı renkleri dışında asıl özelliği güzel ötüşü. Wikipedia'nın İngilizce sayfasında verilen bilgiye göre yaklaşık 40 çeşit ötüşü varmış. Moda'nın Büyük Baştankaraları bu kadar geniş bir repertuar icra ediyorlar mı bilmiyorum ama benim genellikle duyduğum ötüşleri şöyle.

Before starting birdwatching I was so blind that I had never seen this beautiful bird that sings with a pleasant voice in Moda on the trees which extend from the Beach Club up to the Tea Gardens! As I had not bothered to hold up my head and look at the trees and also a bit because the intensive sparrow population in the same zone was screening these pretty birds of much smaller number, I was not aware of the presence of the Great Tits in Moda before I led my camera's zoom lens towards the high branches of the trees.

The Great Tit belongs to the family of passerine birds and is a resident species of Europe, Turkey, Caucasia, Central Asia and North Africa. Despite its name, it measures only 12-14 cm. in length. Besides its striking colours, it has a beautiful voice. According to the information given in Wikipedia's English page, it has up to 40 types of calls. I do not know if Moda's Great Tits perform such a large repertory but I have often heard them singing like this.

Dün Hollandalı blog arkadaşım Gwendolen'den 20 Mart 2010 tarihinin "Dünya Serçe Günü" olarak kutlandığını öğrendim. Dünya çapında böyle bir etkinlik düzenlenmesinin nedeni, şehirlerde yaşayan serçe nüfusunun birçok ülkede çarpıcı biçimde azalmış olmasıymış. Dünya Serçe Günü'nün amacı, etrafımızda her zaman görmeye alışık olduğumuz ve en sıradan kuş olarak niteleyeceğimiz serçenin bile artık tehlike altındaki türler kategorisine girdiğini duyurmak, yaşam tarzımızın doğaya ve -farkında değiliz ama- kendi sağlığımıza ne kadar zarar verdiğine dikkat çekmek ve biyoçeşitliliğin önemini bir kez daha vurgulamakmış. Türkiye'de bu konuda yapılmış bilimsel araştırmalar var mı bilmiyorum ama İstanbul gibi vahşi şehirleşmenin kurbanı olmuş bir kentte serçe nüfusunun bu durumdan olumsuz etkilenmediğini düşünmek pek mümkün değil.

Yesterday I learned from our Dutch blogging friend Gwendolen that March 20, 2010 was celebrated as "World House Sparrow Day". The reason for organizing such a worldwide activity is the dramatic decrease in the urban House Sparrow population in many countries. The purpose of World House Sparrow Day is to announce that even the House Sparrow that we are used to see always around us and that we would qualify as the most common bird is now in the category of the endangered species. They draw our attention to the fact that our lifestyle harms the nature and -although we are not aware of- also our health. They emphasize once again the importance of biodiversity. I do not know if scientific researches have been made in Turkey on the decrease of the House Sparrow population but it is not possible to think that the wild urbanization in Istanbul would not have a negative impact on these birds.

Latince adı Motacilla Alba Alba olan Ak Kuyruksallayan Kara Avrupası'na özgü bir tür olup kış aylarında kıtanın güney kesimleri ile Kuzey Afrika ve Arabistan'a göç eden bir kuştur. Ancak, İspanya'dan Türkiye'ye kadar Akdeniz'in ılıman iklimli kuzey şeridinde yıl boyunca gözlemlenebilir. Ortalama 16-18 cm. boyunda ince bir bedeni olan bu kuş genellikle su kenarlarındaki yerleşim bölgelerinde yaşar ve taş duvar çatlaklarının içine yuva yapar. Böcekçil bir tür olan Ak Kuyruksallayan, köpeklerimi sahil yolundaki parkta dolaştırırken çektiğim yukarıdaki fotoğrafta gördüğünüz üzere, açık alanlarda çimenler arasında gezinerek avlanır.

The White Wagtail (Motacilla Alba Alba) is a common bird of Continental Europe that winters in the southern regions of the mainland, in North Africa and in Arabia. However, it may be observed all year long in the northern shores of the Mediterranean Sea from Spain to Turkey, due to warm climate. It is a slender bird of 16-18 cm. average length that lives generally near habitation and water and that nests in crevices in stone walls. It is an insectivorous bird and, as you see hereabove on the photo I took while I was walking my dogs in the park, it prefers hunting in open areas in the grass.
