Avrupa Saksağanı (European Magpie)

Geçen Cumartesi köpeklerim Alex ve Lily ile Moda sahil yolunda gezinirken Saint-Joseph Lisesi’ne doğru yükselen yamaçta ağaçların arasında yukarıda gördüğünüz saksağanı fark ettim. İstanbul’un Avrupa yakasında, özellikle Büyükçekmece bölgesinde, çok sayıda saksağan görmüş olduğum halde, Moda’da daha önce bu kuşa hiç rastlamamıştım. Fotoğraf makinem her zaman olduğu gibi o sabah da yanımda bulunduğundan hemen birkaç çekim yaptım. 

Last Saturday, during my morning walk on the Moda coast path with my dogs Alex and Lily, the magpie you see hereabove caught my eye among the trees on the slope rising towards Saint-Joseph High School. Although I had observed many magpies on the European side of Istanbul and particularly in Büyükçekmece district, I had never seen this bird in Moda before. I had my camera with me as usual, so I had the chance to make a couple of shots. 

Kısaca saksağan deyip geçtiğimiz bu kuşun tam adı “Avrupa Saksağanı”. Kargagiller ailesine mensup olan saksağan Avrupa, Asya ve Kuzeybatı Afrika’da yaşayan yerleşik bir tür. 40-51 cm arasında değişen boyu ile kargagiller ailesinin iri üyelerinden biri. Siyah, beyaz, mavi renkli tüyleri ve uzun kuyruğu ile çok güzel ve havalı bir kuş olmasına rağmen, saksağan Avrupa ülkelerinde mutsuzluk, şanssızlık, kötü haber getirdiğine inanılan bir canlı. Parlak renkli nesneleri kapıp kaçma huyu olduğu için adı hırsıza çıkmış. Bizdeki “dam üstünde saksağan, vur beline kazmayı” sözü de pek sevecen sayılmaz. Çinliler ise tam aksini düşünüyorlar: Asya’nın diğer ucunda saksağan en değer verilen kuşlardan biri ve mutluluk, şans, güzel haber getirdiğine inanılıyor.

The full name of this bird is the “European Magpie”. It belongs to the crow family and is a resident species of Europe, Asia and Nortwest Africa. It measures 40-51 cm in length and is one of the big size members of the corvids. The magpie is a very beautiful bird with its black, white, blue coloured feathers and its long tail; however, in European countries, it is associated with unhappiness, bad luck and bad news. Since it has a tendency to steal shiny objects, it has also a bad reputation as a thief. The Turkish proverb “If you see a magpie on the roof, send it away with a mattock” is not a sign of sympathy neither. Chinese people think the exact opposite: In the Far East, the magpie is considered as one of the most precious birds and people believe that magpies bring happiness, good luck and good news.
